One of the runaway hits of last year’s Edinburgh Festival was a late night show called Weekend Rockstars, produced by Hull’s Middle Child Theatre Company. The show beat hundreds of musicals at the festival to win the Musical Theatre Network Development Award and now it’s on its way to Woolwich Tramshed.
It’s not an ordinary musical though! Walking into the theatre, the audience find the stage set for a music gig. The band comes on stage, and what follows is an electrifying concert, a series of indie style pop songs which interconnect to tell a story, supported by a projected backdrop.
Fest Magazine said “this performance’s biggest endorsement is for the sheer ecstatic power of a good night out”, while The Stage said the show “aims for, and hits, that sweet spot between gig and theatre. The room reverberates with late night energy. It’s a cocky, noisy swaggering sort of show, but it’s also unexpectedly, genuinely moving – catching you off guard, taking hold of you and twisting.” That’s big praise.
Greenwich Theatre has teamed up with the producers to bring Weekend Rockstars to the Tramshed in Woolwich, just a minute’s walk from Woolwich Arsenal Station, this coming weekend. The theatre’s Artistic Director said “I saw the show late one night in Edinburgh last August, and immediately started to work out how we could bring it to the borough. Weekend Rockstars isn’t something you just watch – it’s a show you watch and then want to talk about with everyone you know.”
