About
Discover the Hidden Spaces of St Alfege Church
Join St Alfege Church’s knowledgeable tour guides for a rare opportunity to explore areas of this remarkable historic church that are usually closed to the public. As part of the Heart of Greenwich: Place and People Project, these special tours reveal the rich stories of those who lived, worked and worshipped here over the centuries.
Descend into the atmospheric crypt to uncover fascinating stories from Greenwich’s past and imagine how the vaulted spaces would have appeared 200 years ago. Then climb to the galleries for stunning views across the church’s magnificent interior, including its impressive suspended ceiling - the largest in Europe when constructed in the early 18th century. Along the way, hear about the colourful characters who have shaped the church’s history.
NOTE: Access to the crypt and galleries involves climbing steep stairs and some bending, and may not be suitable for all visitors.
