A letter written by Sir Christopher Wren, alongside information on the significance of Portland Stone will be exhibited in the Painted Hall vestibule. This is part of the Wren 300 project, a year-long programme to commemorate the life and legacy of architect Sir Christopher Wren.

On October 11, 1700, Sir Christopher Wren wrote a letter in his own hand to Thomas Gilbert, Overseer of the King’s Quarries of the Isle of Portland requesting a supply of 2,000 tons of Portland stone for the building of the Royal Hospital for Seamen, Greenwich.

This letter, alongside information on the significance of Portland Stone, and explaining how the stone was brought from Dorset to London will be exhibited in the Painted Hall vestibule from 25th February to commemorate Christopher Wren’s death.
