About

Double bill of new work from artists Isabella Thompson and Day Job Theatre.

Plaything by Isabella Thompson
Everybody thinks she’s a child, including that bloke on the telly. How many characters will it take for this cabaret performer to prove her worth? Or will she always be this industry’s plaything… 'Plaything' follows a comedy cabaret performer who is notorious for her on-stage toddler persona. After an unfortunate live TV interview, she feels forced to take radical action to redeem herself. The tactic? To perform a brand new character every time she steps on stage. The story of ‘Plaything’ highlights the conflicting expectations and demands of womxn in the arts. We zoom in on the infantilisation and patronisation that young female performers face in the industry today using cameos from the past to ask ourselves “how did we get here?” This meta-theatrical, multi-layered production forges a deep connection with its audience whilst consistently challenging their preconceptions of the performing arts industry and even the medium of theatre itself.
* Suitable for ages 15+

BRAINS by Day Job Theatre
Livia Kojo Alour shares Stùrm, exploring how black people, living in the diaspora, experience climate breakdown. These experiences, combined with childhood memories of nature and climate events like storms - shape their current fears, hopes and ideas of future through music, spoken word, creative captioning, video art and BSL.        Kiera was a zombiephile (a fan of all undead media) but now finds the tropes hit a bit too close to home. Henry prefers rom-coms and couldn’t spot a cliché until it was biting him in the face. The contrast between Kiera’s laissez-faire attitude towards getting eaten and Henry’s desperation to make it through to the other side prompts the question, “Why survive when there’s nothing to live for?”
* Suitable for ages 16+ due to adult language and reference to violence
