Love at first sight? It can happen in Greenwich!
You’re in the Undercroft Café at the Old Royal Naval College and you see them browsing the gift shop across the way. Your eyes meet, and you just know what’s going to happen next: you’ve seen it on screen – and now it’s happening in real life.
Whether Greenwich is the scene of your ‘meet cute’ (a story you may end up telling your grandchildren one day) or you make a day, or night, in Greenwich your perfect first date – this is the Royal Borough for romance.
Here’s a plan to sweep your valentine off their feet, or at least have a great day out and some great stories to tell your friends.
First, where to meet? There’s no better ‘green flag’ than being on time, which is why a rendezvous at the Royal Observatory is a good bet. Even if you’re running behind schedule you can always claim you were ‘on time’ if your meeting spot is the Greenwich Meridian marker! Actually, maybe just don’t be late.
After a walk and talk around Greenwich Park, with a side quest to try to spot deer that are back in the park, make your way to the Queen's House (Bridgerton fans take note!). Wander through the gallery admiring portraits and seascapes then take a snap on the iconic Tulip Stairs.
By now you and your lover will no doubt be a little peckish, so it’s time to treat your tastebuds. Greenwich Market is famous for its global street food: make your choices and find a cosy spot to dine together. There’s also ample opportunity to surprise your date with a thoughtful, unique gift as you stroll the stalls of art, crafts, local designer or vintage wares in the market and beyond.
If you don’t want the magic to end, a stroll along the Thames, a cruise up the river with City Cruises, or a flight from Greenwich Peninsula to Royal Victoria Dock and back on the IFS Cloud Cable Car, when the sun is starting to set, could be the most romantic way to end your day.
And there are plentiful options to carry on with some cocktails, live music or games at The O2. See where the day takes you. If you want to make a weekend of it, book a night at the Zedwell Hotel.
